"Tian Long Ba Bu is an adaption of a Jin Yong novel of the same name. The epic centers around the Beggar Leader Qiao Feng, the Dali Prince Duan Yu and the Shaolin Monk Xu Zhu. Each of their stories are interweaved throughout the show and finally clash and join at the climax of the story. Qiao Feng's story is his quest to find his real identity and the mystery surrounding an event that occured 30 years prior that left him as an orphan. Duan Yu's story covers his meetings with many of his half sisters that he did not know he had (thanks to his adventurous dad during his young days) and the battle with Duan Yuan Qing as the rightful ruler of Dali. Xu Zhu is a lowly Shaolin Monk who gets caught in the middle of an internal struggle of the Care Free Sect, one of the most powerful and secretative sects around. Their stories take place during the Northern Song Dynasty and across warring kingdoms of Song, Liao, Dali, and Western Xia."
I liked this drama, I really did. However, I did not enjoy the beginning and end very much. I have to agree that the beginning and end were a bit rushed. Then again, I guess it's because in the original novel the story is also rushed. In all honesty, I didn't really like Qiao Feng's story at all. I loved Duan Yu and Xu Zhu's stories as they were funny and enjoyable, but Qiao Feng's story was just kind of annoying. If it weren't for the two other main characters, I wouldn't have even watched it.
I kind of like the fact that they just switch actors when the characters are supposed to be in disguise. It made it kind of funny and I bet it was a lot easier for the make up artists then to have to create a disguise for the actors. As far as the acting goes, I didn't pay too much attention to it. I'm kind of a sucker for Jimmy Lin just because he makes me laugh. There are certain actors that can make people laugh just by their expressions, and Jimmy is one of them.
Funny Note: Guy gets hit in the face with a twig on Episode 11 around 12:23

"Lee Soo Ha, 38th granddaughter of the Jae Ahn Lee clan and owner of the clan manor Hwa Ahn Dang, is trying to save the place from going bankrupt. Hwang Dong Gyu, oldest grandson of the president of TOP Group, is trying to buy Hwa Ahn Dang because his grandfather, who was once a servant at the manor, cannot rest in peace unless he spends his last days in Hwa Ahn Dang's master suite. Hwang Chan Min, Dong Gyu's playboy cousin, is his rival in business and love. Enter Seo Hwa Ran, a model who has a secret history with and a secret plan for Hwa Ahn Dang (and Chan Min), and Lee Joon Yong, Soo Ha's brother and Chan Min's friend who can't forget a girl from Hwa Ahn Dang he knew when he was a kid... This drama is adapted from the novel, "Kimchi Mandu."
I've tried to watch this drama several times, but the first episode was so boring that I could never get through it even though so many people have said what a wonderful drama this is. I finally got around to watching this recently, though, and I have to say that I absolutely love it! The female lead is hilarious as Lee Soo Ha. The facial expressions she gives on camera are priceless. I think I would watch this over and over again just to see her expressions.
I think the reason I like this the best, other than the comedy, is the simple fact that it isn't as cliche as most Korean dramas. The lead male character isn't a cold rich guy who treats the main girl like dirt. I can finally watch a drama without having to see a female character get continually spat on by the male lead. I really hate it when they make the female take crap from the male and she still falls for him. It makes me want to murder the writer.
All in all, this is a wonderful little drama to check out if you ever have time.

Rating: ***.5
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Episodes: 16
Cast: Han Chae Young, Hong Soo Hyun, Jo Hyun Jae, Jun Hye Bin, Lee Chun Hee
"Cha Eun-jae (Han Chae-young) decides to go to Italy to learn how to become a chef to attain her childhood dream of making Italian food. She adores spaghetti and all sorts of pasta ever since she was a little kid. In Italy, she meets Han Lee-jun (Cho Hyeon-jae), who is an heir to a family fortune and has come to Italy in search of his mother. They go out and get to know each other for only six day but she falls madly in love with him. Six years pass and in Korea, she meets Han Lee-jun once again... The drama takes place in Italy and is a story of how a young girl finds her way to the heart of a rich young man, who is obsessed with cleanliness."
Although this drama is nice, it's kind of annoying in my honest opinion. There's nothing wrong with the drama or anything, I just didn't enjoy the story all that much. I guess that's my own personal opinion though. The genre says it's comedy, but I didn't really find it that funny. For those of you that like Romance and Drama genres, I recommend this drama. However, if the main reason that you watch drama is for the comedy, I would say that there are better comedies out there than this one. It's a great drama to watch if you're bored, though. It's short and sweet with a decent plotline, even though it's a little bit predictable.

Fairy From Wonderland
Rating: ****
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Comedy
Episodes: 39
Cast: Ariel Lin, Hu Ge, TAE, Dou Zhi Kong, Lv Yi
"This drama is a retelling of the well-known love story between a goddess and a mortal.
Goddess Xiao Qi commits a major crime. She is punished by having her powers stripped away and is banished to the mortal realm. She can only regain her goddess status by accomplishing 100 charitable acts. Dong Yong rescues her and teaches her what it's like to be a mortal. However, she also learns how to love even though love is forbidden between goddesses and mortals. When their love affair is discovered, heavenly guards descend onto the mortal realm to separate the two lovers. However, they are willing to do anything to stay together."
As someone who has never heard or watched the story before, this drama is entirely new to me. That being said, I cannot say whether or not the drama stuck with the story or not. The main problem with this series, though, is there are two versions. The one I watched wasn't the 39 episode series, but the shorter one. That being said, I think you should be careful when finding the episodes. Although the scenes that were cut were virtually meaningless, they forgot to remove flashbacks that contained deleted scenes. That really irked me.
Although Ariel Lin and Hu Ge seem to match their characters pretty well, I have to wonder if they ever think of acting as other types of characters. Ariel always plays a spunky girl and Hu Ge always plays a nice (but a little naive) guy. Does anyone know of a drama or movie that they have done that wasn't the same type of character that they always play? It really kind of bothers me when I see an actor stuck in the same role time and time again. For me it says that they have no desire to improve upon their acting. Although I like the main actors, I feel that they could grow as actors if they just stepped out of their comfort zone.
As far as the actual drama was concerned, I liked it. There's this one point about love that I really liked from this drama. The drama basically says that you can still love someone even if you say you don't. You see, no matter what we say, it won't change our feelings for other people. We can deny love a million times, but that love will not change. True love stays the same whether you want to love that someone or not. Even if loving someone is tough and gives you great pain, feelings don't easily change. Just because you decide not to be with someone doesn't mean you stopped loving them. I think the only thing I can't really decide on is the ending. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending, or if I like it at all. On one hand it's sad, but on the other hand it's kind of happy. It kind of made me want to know what happened next in the story.
Question: Didn't they say he could be reincarnated into a god? What happened with that? Is that just a translation error?

Haphazard Fate: An Original Internet Novel
Prologue
There are some memories that will forever be stuck in your mind. No matter how hard you try to forget them, they will never disappear. You will relive the time you spent over and over whether you are sleeping or awake. It’s almost like a broken record. It continues to skip. The memories are like flashes. The more I think about the time that I spent with him, the more I realize that I will probably never be able to forget even if I want to. His black eyes and hair, the way he smiles… Everything that he did or said is a lasting memory to me. Even though we are a half a world apart, I cannot keep my mind from traveling all the way back to him. Reader, you may be wondering what was so significant about the man that I met that day, and why in the world I am not able to let go of my past. Let me tell the story of a couple whose fate was confused.
His and my story started when I was a young worker at an online advertising company. Looking back at that time, I was quite silly back then. I was always searching for that “fate” that I had always believed in. I thought that, one day, I would magically find my true love and that we’d be happy together forever.
“The red string of fate, also referred to as the red thread of destiny, red thread of fate, and other variants, is an East Asia belief originating from Chinese legend and is also used in Japanese legend. According to this myth, the gods tie an invisible red string around the ankles of men and women who are destined to be soul mates and will one day marry each other. Often, in Japanese culture, it is thought to be tied around the little finger. According to Chinese legend, the deity in charge of "the red thread" is believed to be Yue Xia Lao (月下老) (often abbreviated to "Yuelao" [月老]), the old lunar matchmaker god who is also in charge of marriages. The two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, regardless of time, place or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break.” In the western culture, a similar concept to this is the term “soulmate.” Although the term “soulmate” isn’t always referring to the mythological sense, the original meaning is that two people can be two halfs of the same soul. Basically, finding your soulmate means finding your other half.
Another similar term is the “Yin and Yang” theory. The yin yang is "used to describe how polar or seemingly contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world, and how they give rise to each other in turn. Opposites thus only exist in relation to each other.” The Yin and Yang is much like relationships. For the most part, females are yin and males are yang. Yin beings are water elements. They are said to be “slow, soft, yielding, diffuse, cold, wet, and passive”, however there are things about water that are not described. Water can destroy houses and create valleys. Water can never truly be captured because it can change from a gas, to a liquid, and also to a solid. With water, life can be sustained, but without water, life will wither away. Water may be passive, but it never gives up until it reaches its destination. However, without that spark of “Yang”, water will not be able to change its form. “Yang, by contrast, is fast, hard, solid, focused, hot, dry, and aggressive.” What is not described about Yang, though, is that it can destroy things very easily. Once a spark ignites something, the Yang will spread. Although focused, Yang may end up going down the wrong path if it doesn’t have water to calm it down.
When I was young, I foolishly thought that fate was something that couldn’t be changed. I thought that what was meant to be would be. I thought that, if that person was my soul-mate, that we would end up together no matter what the circumstances were. Looking back at that time, I was very naïve. You see, fate is haphazard. Everyone’s fate is dependent upon or characterized by chance and whether or not you take that chance. Every day there are opportunities presented to you. Depending on whether you take the opportunity or not will lead you to a different set of opportunities. In the end, your fate changes daily depending on what you do and do not do.
If I did not enter that contest… If I missed my flight… If I hadn’t lost my bag… If I hadn’t met him… To this day, I wonder what would be different if none of those things happened. If things were different, would my fate have changed? In the end, there is no equation for a “happily ever after.” We cannot rely on chance or a specific plan in order to obtain happiness. The only thing we can do is to simply live without regrets. You must do whatever you can in order to obtain what you think is happiness and let chance decide your fate. You must do what you can when you can and not torture yourself if it doesn’t turn out the way you wanted to.

This is the story of my haphazard kind of fate. Actually, even though it doesn't seem like it would be, it's kind of a funny story. In fact, most would say it's almost unbelievable.

Legend of the Condor Heroes 2008
Rating: ****
Genre: Wuxia
Episodes: 50
Cast: Anthony Wong, Ariel Lin, Hu Ge, Liu Shi Shi, Yuan Hong
"When their husbands were killed by the Song army, two pregnant women found safe haven in foreign lands. Li Ping gave birth to Guo Jing, a sturdy but blockheaded young man who roamed the Mongolian prairie with the family of Temujin. Bao Xi Ruo gave birth to Yang Kang, a smart and crafty young man who became the son of Wanyan Hong Lie, a successor of the Jin empire. When a pact between their martial arts masters brought them together and the truth behind their fathers' deaths was revealed, one found martial arts enlightenment and a cause greater than his own while the other descended into darkness and destroyed everything and everyone around him."
Although this drama was an interesting watch, they did not keep the integrity of the original story. For viewers like me that has never read the trilogy or watched any of the previous versions, we can enjoy the story without the pain of having to see all the changes in the series. However, for those viewers who have read the series, you will probably find this series bothersome. Also, if you plan on watching all three stories in the series (The Legend of the Condor Heroes, The Return of the Condor Heroes, The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber), it's probably best if you pick a different version. This tv series was made to be one complete drama. It wasn't written with the thought that they would be creating the sequels.
Although enjoyable, there were still some visual effects that weren't very wonderful. For instance, did you see the stuffed condors in the nest that they used as props?
As far as the characters were concerned, I found Guo Jing hilarious. I really don't know if his character was originally supposed to be like that, but the way Hu Ge portrayed him made him look like he was a complete idiot. I mean, I know that Jing'er is supposed to be dumb, but this one was beyond dumb. I don't know how anyone would be able to fall for him. I really enjoyed Ariel Lin as Huang Rong, though. She really fits well with the character. Spunky, smart, and mischievous is just the style that works for her. I like it better when she plays a smart character.

Return of Condor Heroes 2006
Rating: ****
Genre: Romance, Wuxia
Episodes: 41
Cast:Chen Zi Han, Liu Yi Fei, Huang Xiao Ming, Yang Mi, Jessey Meng
"Adapted from the novel by Jinyong (aka Louis Cha). This is a sequel to Legend of Condor Heroes and a prequel of sorts to Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre. The story concerns the adventures of Yang Guo, an orphaned boy in a mid-13th Century China. From his humble beginnings, the street wise Yang Guo gets passed around from one prestigious master to another but none of them will teach him any kung fu. While escaping from a tortured experience under Quan Zhen Sect's Zhao Zhi Jing, he meets Xiao Long Nu, the girl who will become his kung fu master and eventually the love of his life."
Gorgeous, it is absolutely gorgeous. It starts out with the most beautiful opening I've ever seen in a Chinese drama. The opening music is chilling and goes perfectly with the bittersweet clips of the series. I think this is one of my favorite stories just because of how beautiful it is. It is also very amusing and romantic. I have to agree with another viewer when she said it was "cheesy". I believe 1/10th of the drama was scenes of the couple staring lovingly at each other. There were times when I burst into laughter because it was so cheesy.
Although pretty, this drama is not without faults. I really have to pick on how bad the parenting in this drama is. I mean, have you watched this drama before? The couple cares for a child temporarily, and they are going around fighting people with the child in their arms. The actors are so concerned with the action sequences, that they forget that they need to act like the rolled up blanket has a baby in it. The baby gets whip lashed over and over again. It gets kicked, dropped, and left unattended for hours at a time. The characters don't even spend the time thinking about how they are going to feed the child. Seriously, what the...? I'm surprised that the child didn't end up stupid like Guo Jing after all that shaking. In fact, I'm surprised that the child even survived, to tell you the truth. Haven't they ever heard of Shaken baby syndrome? Don't try that at home.
I also have to point out that Yang Guo as a young teen played by Huang Xiao Ming looks extremely creepy. When they first introduce the teenage Yang Guo, Guo'er is still very immature. The way he stares at "GuGu" is just creepy. He really looked like a pervert. I kind of think they should have used a third actor for the time when he was still a teen. His age when they filmed this just doesn't go very well with a young teenage character.

Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre (Yi Tian Tu Long Ji) 2009
Rating: ***
Genre: Wuxia, Romance, Drama
Episodes: 40
Cast: Deng Chao, Ady An, Liu Jing, He Zhuo Yan, Zhang Meng, Lu Chen, Wu Xiao Dong
"Based on the popular novel by Jin Yong Kam Yung, he also wrote Legend of the Condor Heroes and Return of the Condor Heroes, the Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre takes place during 14th century China during the Mongolian Yuan Dynasty, roughly 100 years after the events of Return of the Condor Heroes. After decades of struggles, famine, and bitterness which the Chinese citizens blamed on the Yuan Dynasty's misgovernment, the Martial Arts sects have begun to rebel. Prince Ruyong asks Cheng Kun, a Shaolin monk with an ulterior motive, for a plan on how to deal with the rebels."
For this drama, I really want to give it a lower score but I am trying my best to be nice. Now, I will admit that it was a show that got me addicted, but the production did not give the story justice. It was quite obvious with the props that they were stretching the budget a bit. I mean, did you see that stuffed polar bear they used? There were so many problems with the special effects, props, and acting that I really don't know where to begin. However, since A is the first letter of the alphabet, I guess I should start with the acting.
I may not know much about acting, but there are some universal expressions that can be distinguished no matter the culture. Many of the actors didn't do well in expressing pain, and it really annoyed me. It kind of made me want to repeatedly bang my head against my desk. It wasn't so bad once the main character was old enough and the main story started, but by then I was about 10 episodes in. In all honesty, I think that's why it was so bad. If you're going to pick bad actors for the historic scenes, you should probably use "flashback" orders. What I mean is that some writers choose to start the story off a quarter of the way through the story and do flashbacks of past events to let the viewers understand what previously happened in the main characters' life. This works better than having to sit through 10 episodes (7.5 hours) of bad acting before the main story even begins.
The next main point I have is the special effects.
1. The snow land looked like desert sand. It's as if they filmed at the beach and then digitally whitened the sand to make it look like snow.
2. Whenever they did an aerial view of the Fiery Ice island (or whatever they called it), I could see a sail boat in the shot. (Maybe I'm seeing things?)
3. They use the same aerial shots over and over and over again. Like the scene with the birds flying or the aerial view of the island.
4. The change in scenery was way too often on the snowy island. It looks like various artists created different view points for the backgrounds but never compared notes so the color of the sky/ground and general area goes back and forth during the scenes.
5. They get out of the water and the next moment they are completely dry.
6. Episode 4 - 12:02 - In this frame, you can see that they forgot to use the special effects. You can actually see the raw footage, including the green screen in the background. I have to say, though, it's a nice green screen they have there.
7. Although I didn't notice it myself, I heard there was one instance where you could see the wire pretty clearly. If anyone knows the timing for that, I'd really like to know as I'd like to see what I missed.
8. When they did an aerial view of an iceberg, the water didn't react with the ice at all. A professional would use visual effects to make it look like the ocean was reacting to the iceberg. Because of that, it looked extremely fake. I won't even start on how it looked like styrofoam.
9. An iceberg usually has at least half of it's volume under water. They obviously didn't know that, though, as some of the shots didn't reflect that fact.
I also have a few micellaneous comments I'd like to discuss. For instance, why doesn't she call him a hubby-type name instead of "Ge"? They are married, yet she calls him that. It's just kind of odd to me, you know? I'm sure that even in that dynasty they had words like "husband" or "dear" to describe their spouse. "Ge" is fine for very good friends or lovers, but for your husband? Secondly, do you want to know how Eskimos came about? The married couple had a few more kids, but they abandoned them on the island. (Ha ha ha, I'm just kidding.) Thirdly, and maybe I'm wrong here, the main character completely forgets about one of the girls for like ten episodes. He goes to save her, but ends up getting distracted and never mentions her again until she finally shows up. What's up with that? Last, but not least, I never would have thought I'd read the word "Lion King" in this series. I don't know why, but I found it comical.
Looking back, I really did enjoy the series. The only problem is that they didn't produce it well enough to really make the story shine. I can't really say if the reason the effects were so bad was because they didn't have enough money, or they just didn't hire the right people to do the work, but I guess it can't be helped. If you have already read the novel before, I'd suggest that you just skip the first 10 episodes in order to save yourself the misery of having to notice all of the acting and production problems that it had. The last 75% of the drama was very good, but they kind of botched the first quarter of it. I probably won't watch it again mainly because I cannot stand watching all of the mistakes, but it's a decent show to watch if you are bored.
