The Return of Iljimae

Rating: ***.5

Genre: Historical, Romance, Action, Adventure
Episodes: 24
Cast: Jung Hye Young, Jung Il Woo, Kim Min Jong, Yoon Jin Seo, Sandara Park

"The story is about a man fighting against the selfish and corrupt government to save the ordinary peasants. Iljimae was abandoned by his birth father and adopted by a Chinese couple. He returns to Korea to find his birth family and realizes how unjust the world really is. He watched as his first love, Dal Yi, was wrongfully put to death. Iljimae then vows to help the commoners from the corrupt government officials. "

I very much enjoyed this series. The only problem I found was the first three episodes. Actually, it's mainly the first episode. If you skipped first episode you probably wouldn't have had any trouble watching the rest of the series. The first episode was boring and the narration just killed it. The drama wasn't interesting at all until the fourth episode. Even though I love the story, they didn't do a wonderful job in the beginning. I personally think they could have done a lot better. Still, it is definitely something you should check out.

Iljimae

Rating: ****

Genre: Action, Adventure, Historical, Period Drama
Episodes: 20
Cast: Han Hyo Joo, Kim Chang Wan, Lee Jun Ki, Lee Young Ah, Park Shi Hoo

"Set during the Joseon Dynasty, Yong acted as a hooligan in the marketplace by day but at night he was a thief who robbed corrupted government officials to give to the poor. After each robbery he left behind a painting depicting a plum tree branch to make his mark and was thus named Iljimae. His main purpose was not so much to rob but to search for the owner of a specially designed sword which he saw as a child was used to kill his father, a loyal subject of the emperor. Eun Chae is a government official's daughter who despite her upbringing has a lot of empathy towards the poor. She met Iljimae by chance and couldn't help admiring him for what he stood for even though she had never seen his face."

For the most part, I usually just stick to the heartfelt comedies. However, I somehow found myself watching this show and got hooked. Although the first episode isn't the most interesting thing in the world, the story really sucks you in. Lee Jun Ki did a wonderful job of playing the smexy Iljimae. Although I'm not completely sure about the ending, I completely and utterly loved this series and would gladly watch it again.

Elfen Lied

Rating: ***.5
Anime!

Genre: Action, Drama, Ecchi, Horror, Romance, Psychological
Episodes: 13 + 1 OVA

"The Diclonius, a mutated homosapien that is said to be selected by God and will eventually become the destruction of mankind, possess two horns on their heads and have a "sixth sense" which gives them telekinetic abilities. Due to this dangerous power, they have been captured and isolated in laboratories by the government. Lucy, a young and psychotic Diclonius, manages to break free of her confines and brutally murders most of the guards in the laboratory where she is being held, only to be shot in the head as she makes her escape. She survives, falling off a cliff into the ocean and manages to drift along to a beach where two teenagers, Kouta and Yuka, discover her. Having lost her memories, she was named after the only thing that she can now say, "Nyuu," and the two allow her to stay at Kouta"

Although I'm sure that this anime is probably supposed to be for guys to watch (As it has mainly female characters and has a lot of nudity and gore) I actually really like it. As a gore enthusiast I can't help but want to watch it over and over again. Truthfully, though, the opening song brought me to tears a few times after watching the anime. When you first watch the opening credits, it's just a song, but as you watch the anime, you'll see how well the song fits the anime. The reason it is only 3.5 stars is because: (1) there were too many unneeded nude scenes -.-" (2) some of the storyline is just plain bad.

Dexter

Rating: *****

Genre: Police, Serial Killer
Episodes: 49 (And counting)
Cast: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, Julie Benz, Lauren Vélez

"During the day, Dexter Morgan is a jovial employee in the Miami Metropolitan Police Department's crime lab, but his meticulously crafted life masks his true nature. In reality Dexter is a disciplined and murderous psychopath (a self-admitted "monster"), and he slakes his blood lust at night by carefully killing the serial killers he tracks down during the day. Based on the novels (Darkly Dreaming Dexter, Dearly Devoted Dexter and Dexter in the Dark) by Jeff Lindsay." Written by Clenching Teeth Toast Guy

Although I have yet to watch all the seasons yet, I am hooked. What's better than gore & mystery? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! The storyline, acting, and script are all amazing so far. The show will probably go sour eventually (as every story has it's ending), but so far it is going strong.

True Blood

Rating: (I don't think I should be rating this)

Genre: Vampires, Drama
Episodes: 30 (And counting)
Cast: Anna Paquin, Ryan Kwanten, Rutina Wesley, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, and Nelsan Ellis

"Following the creation of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed from legendary monsters to fellow citizens overnight. Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) is a telepath and waitress at Merlotte's in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, owned by Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell), a shapeshifter—though this secret is kept hidden. One night, Sookie meets Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a handsome 173-year-old vampire who has returned to Bon Temps following the death of his last remaining relative. As she cannot hear his thoughts, she finds it easy to be in his company and, over the first season, the two become romantically involved."

I watched the first season so far and I'm still on the fence about it. For me, blood and gore are my favorite parts of any vampire film. I think that's why I remained interested throughout the first season. As far as it goes, I wouldn't let anyone under 18 watch this. There is a lot of violence and stuff in it that isn't appropriate for younger viewers. I don't know how much I really like the story though. I love how it was filmed, and the story is interesting enough, but I don't know if I would ever praise it. I'll have to watch season 2 and see how it goes :D

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Rating: ****

Genre: Vampires, Romance
Episodes: 144?
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Head, James Marsters

"At the young age of 16, Buffy was chosen to hunt vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness. After the ordeal at Hemery High Buffy Summers wound up at Sunnydale High. Joined with Willow Rosenberg and Alexander "Xander" Harris, and her watcher Giles, Buffy fights the challenges of High School and saves the world...a lot." Written by Sundae

As a rabid vampire fan, I really did enjoy this series even though there are some parts of it that weren't as per the mythology. However, if it wasn't for the amazing side cast I would probably not continued to watch the whole series. Nicholas Brendon and Alyson Hannigan did really well in their supporting roles, and I loved Alyson's character. Also, James Marsters' character (Spike) was one of my favorites. Although I don't want to include spoilers, you'll see that he becomes a main character. Spike always made the show entertaining.

Twilight

Rating: (I'll Skip this, read below as to why)
MOVIE!

Genre: Romance, Vampires
Cast: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Billy Burke, Peter Facinelli

"Bella Swan has always been a little bit different. Never one to run with the crowd, Bella never cared about fitting in with the trendy, plastic girls at her Phoenix, Arizona high school. When her mother remarried and Bella chooses to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she didn't expect much of anything to change. But things do change when she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen. For Edward is nothing like any boy she's ever met. He's nothing like anyone she's ever met, period. He's intelligent and witty, and he seems to see straight into her soul. In no time at all, they are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance - unorthodox because Edward really isn't like the other boys. He can run faster than a mountain lion. He can stop a moving car with his bare hands. Oh, and he hasn't aged since 1918. Like all vampires, he's immortal. That's right - vampire. But he doesn't have fangs - that's just in the movies. And he doesn't drink human blood, though Edward and his family are unique among vampires in that lifestyle choice. To Edward, Bella is that thing he has waited 90 years for - a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. Somehow or other, they will have to manage their unmanageable love. But when unexpected visitors come to town and realize that there is a human among them Edward must fight to save Bella? A modern, visual, and visceral Romeo and Juliet story of the ultimate forbidden love affair - between vampire and mortal." Written by Summit entertainment

The reason I didn't dare give this movie a proper rating is I don't know where to base my rating. As far as the production of the script and the acting, it was pretty good. However, I personally just didn't enjoy the script and overall story. Sorry Twilight fans, but that's just my personal opinion. When it comes to Mythology, I'm a hardcore fan. I prefer things that are based on the original. Taking blood sucking vampires and making them sissy kind of ruins the fun of it for me. Of course, that's my own opinion. Feel free to give me yours.

Atashinchi no Danshi

Rating: ****

Genre: Comedy
Episodes: 11
Cast: Horikita Maki, Kaname Jun, Mukai Osamu, Okada Yoshinori, Yamamoto Yusuke

"These days, the term "homeless" has taken on new meaning. There are youths referred to as "net cafe refugees," who have neither a job nor a place to live, but who find themselves hopping around internet cafes. One such refugee is a 20-year-old girl named Chisato, who lost her mother at a young age due to sickness. She spent her youth trying to escape from the huge debt her father left her, and her battle with the repossessors unfolded every night. However, her life changed after meeting one man named Shinzo, changing her views on the meaning of "family." Shinzo comes from a rich family tracing back to the Edo period, and he adopted six good-looking sons with the hope of one becoming his successor, but all of them have strange personalities. Shinzo promises to free Chisato from her debt if she marries him and becomes the mother of his sons. However, a life with these six guys under one roof will not go smoothly. "

This is a series I definitely enjoyed. Although I'm sure there were plenty of things that weren't that great, it is something worth looking into.

Gigolo Wannabe

Rating: **.5
MOVIE!

Genre: Comedy
Cast: Narumi Riko, Suga Takamasa, Oguri Shun, Kirishima Yusuke, Matsuo Toshinobu

"Seven young men who are desperate for quick money arrive at a desolate seaside bar, called Dog Days, to audition as "hosts." This is the highly popular occupation of entertaining female patrons with smooth talk and a soothing smile while offering them drinks at "host clubs." Although their previous jobs varied from street performer to ex-banker, they are all happy to get this dream job so easily, until they discover that the manager has run off with their deposits! Upon seeing them so discouraged, the sympathetic bar owner offers his place for them to open up a host club by themselves. With the help of his granddaughter, Chika (who has a heart disorder), and despite the combination of their initial confusion, personal problems and a typhoon that almost blew the place down, they gradually find the true meaning of friendship, trust and love. "

I really didn't like it at all. There was nothing in the script that made me want to watch it again. It wasn't overly funny, sentimental, or unique enough for me to watch again. Maybe I didn't get to watch the whole thing? The place I was watching it only had a certain amount of parts, but the place it stopped at left me hanging and confused. All and all, it's not something that I can wholeheartedly recommend.

This is such a fun drama. I think the most unique thing about it is that when she's daydreaming, you can't really tell. Like you'll be watching it and you won't be able to tell if it is showing her daydream or reality because there are no special effects on the daydream parts. Anyway, it's quite fun. Then again, I think half of the reason I love it is because of the violence. I don't know why, but I enjoy watching women beat up their men. Anyway, take a look at the drama, you'll be glad you did... Well, if you like romantic comedies that is.

The female lead is a 25-year-old employee of the company who becomes responsible for her five younger adopted siblings after her parents meet with sudden deaths."

I re-watched this recently and it was just as good as I had remembered. It really is a wonderful story. I think the very beginning wasn't as great acting wise though.. The first episode didn't really show the actors very well. However, they fixed that real fast and the show ended up doing really well.
